Live Coup Funk!

November 17, 2005 – 3:30 am

Last weekend was great!! I slept in until about 11AM on Friday afternoon, did some random stuff (who really cares what…), and then packed up my shit for the road trip to SF. The drive was much better than it could have been (I didn’t really want to drive). The week prior to the show I was able to get Ted to agree to come with me, and it was a good things because it got us a place to stay after the show. Ted’s girl, Wako, lives in San Francisco and she was nice enough to let me sleep on the living room floor.

We left Chico around 3PM and rocked my mp3 player on Ted’s care stereo during the drive (get a better speakers dude!). Traffic going into the City was so great, but we did get to Wako’s apartment by about 6:00. Ted and I knocked back a few beers, grabbed some mediocre Japanese food (sake!), another beer or two, and the took off for the show. We were actually going to take the bus, but it never really caught up while we walked, so we just kept walking. I had a map that showed where to go, but we somehow seemed to get lost. Sort of. After quite a bit of wandering we managed to get to market street and some other intersection, which was one half block away from the street our show was on. We actually walked right by the block. Boooze…. Some homeless guy helped us find Jesse Avenue for a slight fee (I felt guilty paying for some reason). It was worth the price too.

Once we got inside the venue the opening group was on and we stood back and watched. They were good, but it was important to conserve out strength (and our ears). After about 15 minutes another dude came on and beatboxed for a good half hour. He was cool, but I was good and ready for the Lifesavas to come on. Ted and I both had seen them in Chico, and they didn’t disappoint in the city. After a 45 minute sweet sweet set they left the stage and a few people headed out and started setting up some guitar pedals, turn table connections, and an extra microphone. Then two guitarists and a drummer arrived on stage and started to tune and practices a bit. I knew how close the main act was to being on! After about 10 minutes if this the instrumentation got serious and I knew it was time to really start.

The Coup’s set lasted for at least an hour. I yelled so much that it is a miracle my voices wasn’t gone for a week. After their hour on stage they retreated backstage, but we knew it wasn’t really finished. After a good amount of shouting we got them back on stage one by one, and a few more songs of the bomb funk followed.

God damn!
